The Free School Seligenstadt-Mainhausen (short: FSSM ) is an integrated comprehensive school with elementary school and entrance level privately sponsored and based in Mainhausen , district of Zellhausen . It was founded in 1998 by parents and is organized in the legal form of an association . It is officially recognized as a school with a special pedagogical character.

The school was initially a primary school. It was about a school year 2008/2009 input stage expanded so that even children are taken with consummate fifth birthday. The afternoon care offer is in preparation.

The concept of the free school goes back to Hartmut von Hentig and the experiences at the laboratory school in Bielefeld . The students have English lessons from the first grade and French from the fifth grade, all students learn a musical instrument (string and / or wind instrument) at school.

The school is currently attended by around 100 children from Seligenstadt , Mainhausen , Hainburg , Rodgau , Rödermark , Obertshausen and Babenhausen (as of 2019). Ten educators with different professional backgrounds teach and supervise the students within fixed supervision times.

The school is an all-day school .

Pedagogical orientation

The Seligenstadt Free School is characterized by realistic and project-oriented learning in cross-year groups. Children with special living conditions are integrated into each learning group. The class frequency is between 16 and 25 children (depending on the group size).

The lessons are designed as open lessons with projects, specialist lessons, weekly schedule work and free silent work.

An important part of the school concept is the involvement of the parents in the organization of the school as well as the participation in the lessons themselves. This is done by taking over cleaning services, driving services, but also by offering projects (so-called parenting lessons). This saves the employment of additional staff and deepens the bond with the school.

In the school competition " German School Prize " of the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Heidehof Foundation , the Seligenstadt Free School was able to qualify for the intermediate round in 2007, and for the final round in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Building and location

Since the 2011/12 school year, the Seligenstadt Free School has been located in the building of the former Käthe-Paulus-Schule in Mainhausen, Zellhausen district. The sponsoring association acquired the building, which has been vacant since 2008, from the Offenbach district. With the move, the FSS became an integrated comprehensive school that teaches students up to the 10th grade.

Before that, the school had been at home since 1999 on an area in the Seligenstadt district of Klein-Welzheim , which had previously served as a residential building or production hall. Working with parents, the founding fathers converted the first 200 m² of the building for school operations, and the upper floor was added as early as 2000. The office, library and music hall were set up in 2001. In 2007/2008 areas were added for the entrance step and a bistro that was used for events. In 2005 the outdoor area was redesigned into a discovery garden.

The school grounds are supplemented by a school garden on the edge of the field, where planting and harvesting can take place, where barbecues and celebrations take place and lessons take place outdoors in and in nature.

Contacts with other schools and kindergartens

For several years there has been a connection with the Buchholz elementary school in Boppard through joint musical work. Several concerts have already been given together, both in Boppard and in Seligenstadt. Every year, both music classes take part in joint free time or joint concerts.

At the organizational level there are connections to Montessori schools in Mühlheim or Darmstadt as well as to the Walinus School in Klein-Welzheim.

The intensive reading work at the school resulted in a regularly recurring project: Reading aloud in kindergartens. The pupils go to different kindergartens to read aloud.

music

The school has a Bläserklasse and a string class . There are several public appearances annually. All students have the opportunity to learn a wind and / or string instrument for three years. The school works closely with the local music associations.
