The Free School Untertaunus (FSU) is a private , integrated comprehensive school in Aarbergen -Kettenbach ( Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis , Hesse ). It is a free alternative school with crèche from ten months, kindergarten, elementary school (with school entry level) and integrated comprehensive school up to 10th grade.

concept

The concept of the school is based on reform pedagogical designs by Maria Montessori , the Jenaplan schools by Peter Petersen and the school models by the French teacher Célestin Freinet . Particular importance is attached to cooperative forms of learning such as projects, circle discussions or working groups. The achievements are not graded until the 8th school year . Instead, the students receive learning reports with detailed performance descriptions.

In addition to the teachers, educators and qualified teachers also work at the school. Instead of traditional school classes, the students are grouped together.

history

The idea for the school arose from the parents' initiative of a toddler group that consciously got together in a rural area in 1982 and that was active in the ecology and peace movement. Lessons started on October 3, 1986 with 12 children, a teacher, a social worker and an educator in a single-family house at Brühlstrasse 17 in Michelbach. At that time it was the first free school in Hesse in a rural area. Two years later the school moved into a former workers' hostel in Kettenbach.

The all-day concept was introduced in 1990 and a good ten years later (2001) the state government approved the expansion to include an integrated comprehensive school . The previously rented site and the real estate were purchased in 2002. In 2005 a school entry level was added to which five-year-olds are accepted.

Buildings and grounds

The entire facility consists of two four-story buildings connected by a transverse structure. In mathematical terms, each child at FSU has 15 m² of building space. In 2005, as part of a campaign by 100 gardeners from BASEG ( Federal Working Group of Self-Administered Horticultural Companies ), the extensive outdoor area was designed to be child-friendly.

groups

The approximately 100 students are divided into six cross-year groups. Each group consists of a maximum of 18 students.

  • Dolphins: corresponds to the entrance level and 1st and 2nd class.
  • Raccoons: This group includes children in the 2nd and 3rd grade.
  • Dragons: This group includes the 3rd and 4th grades.
  • Chameleons: This group includes children in the 5th and 6th grade.
  • Nameless: The group includes conventional grades 7 and 8.
  • Old: The group includes the conventional grades 9 and 10. The students in this group take an intermediate degree, with which they can attend the upper level of all secondary schools with the appropriate grade average.

The entire educational facility also includes a crèche group for children under three and a kindergarten group for children between 2 and 6 years of age.

College

The educational staff from all parts of the facility form a joint team. This includes elementary school, secondary school and grammar school teachers, educators and social pedagogues as well as specialist staff (music, natural and social sciences, sport, media) and with further qualifications for inclusive schooling. Committed parents offer various working groups in the afternoons.

successes

In 2009, the film working group of the FSU won first prize in the age group of 10 to 13 year olds in the film-ready ideas and video competition of the Wiesbaden Cultural Office. Another win with two first prizes came in 2011 at the Visionale 2011, the 24th Hessian Youth Media Festival in Frankfurt.
