The Free Radio Wiesental (until 31 December 2012: sewer rat ) is a non-commercial local radio station . He is a member of the Federal Association of Free Radios .

As a program organizer, the station has been using the name Kanal Ratte 104.5 MHz since 2007 ... the Freie Radio im Wiesental , while the sponsoring association and the legal entity behind the transmitter are called the support group for the Freie Radio Kanal Ratte eV .

history

Since 1995 the broadcast has been from a studio in Schopfheim . The station and its sponsoring association were founded by a group of young people initially in Lörrach , who soon joined the autonomous youth center Café Irrlicht in Schopfheim. The center, which is located in urban areas in a central location on Bahnhofstrasse, made rooms available to the station until 2005. In its beginnings, the radio operated as the Radio-AG of this youth center - a construction from which both sides benefited: A cooperation developed in the organization of concerts, which the Café Irrlicht held on its premises and the radio broadcast live. Members of Café Irrlicht also provided one of the first music editorships that still broadcast for their listeners today.

The station was founded at the time when the state government decided on its own budget to promote private broadcasting, both commercial and non-commercial. The state media authority - in Baden-Württemberg State Authority for Communication (LfK) - has been issuing licenses to private broadcasters every eight years and has the function of a supervisory authority. At the same time, she advises the sponsors of non-commercial broadcasters when submitting applications for the (annual) allocation of funding.

In 1995 the station Freie Radio Kanal Ratte received the license to broadcast the FM frequency 104.5 MHz on the Hohe Möhr transmitter (500 W); at the same time, the program was fed into the cable network of ten cities.

The premises for the transmitter in Bahnhofstrasse comprised a broadcasting studio (with modest but sufficient technology: mixer, several CD players, MD and tape decks; the archiving took place on VHS cassettes) and a small office on 25 square meters. as well as a room for the pre-production of programs. The latter had to be abandoned soon for fire protection reasons .

In 2003, Radio Kanal Ratte again received a license - this time limited to four years - linked to the condition that it should increase its profile. In addition, additional funds were made available for its own premises, which the broadcaster was able to move into in the spring of 2005 in Hauptstrasse in Schopfheim. In the new domicile there is the broadcast studio, a pre-production studio and an office on 80 m². The studio operation was professionalized and expanded. Renovation work was completed on January 1, 2018, and Freie Radio Wiesental now has a total of 150 m² available. The transmitter was also completely technically modernized at the start of 2018 and now broadcasts fully digitally and with new audio and transmission technology.

The station, with its origins in the left-wing scene, has since worked on implementing the mandate of being better anchored in the region as a citizen broadcaster. Nevertheless, the origin has not been forgotten.

In the following years, the members of the station were able to increase public awareness through active participation in events. The newly created live transmission technology made it possible to broadcast regularly to venues on site, to make recordings and thus to enter into larger collaborations. In 2007 the broadcaster was commissioned to broadcast the live broadcast on the first anniversary of the death of the journalist Anna Politkowskaja, who was murdered in Moscow , so that the event in the Basel Theater could be broadcast in parallel by various radio stations across Europe.

At the end of 2007, the four-year license expired. On October 22, 2007, the media council in Baden-Württemberg unanimously voted for the recommendation previously worked out by the board of the State Institute for Communication and thus granted the Schopfheimer station another license, this time for eight years. The previous frequency splitting was dispensed with, so that from January 1, 2008, the Rat channel can operate the 104.5 MHz frequency independently 24 hours a day.

On January 1, 2013, the name of the station was changed to Free Radio Wiesental .

DAB +

The Freie Radio Wiesental is one of the three pilot stations of the DAB + NKL channel "Citizens Media BW" in the Baden-Württemberg state multiplex. To test the new technology, the NKLs were given a free DAB + channel, for which the LfK had already reserved funds since 2013. The original plan was for the Free Radios in Baden-Württemberg to act as a radio broadcaster and apply for the DAB + channel to be assigned by December 31, 2014. However, there was disagreement as to whether DAB + should be operated at all, as DAB + was not yet sufficiently developed and most citizens did not yet have a corresponding receiver. It was feared that the still very important VHF frequencies and their promotion and continued existence would suffer from the financing of DAB +. In the end, the LfK decided to operate the DAB + channel itself; after a survey, three broadcasters decided to take part in a rotation principle: One day each, the university radio Stuttgart Horads 88.6 , the free radio desert wave from Tübingen and the free radio Wiesental are closed Listen.

program

Since the re-licensing on January 1, 2008, Kanal Ratte has been broadcasting 24 hours a day from its studio in Schopfheim. The programs are produced by volunteer radio editors and two part-time administrative employees. The latter mainly produce open broadcasting slots - free broadcasts with citizens who only want to publish on the radio once or for a limited time.

The program is deliberately kept free and colorful.
