The freedom dressage (also horse freedom or just freedom ) is a technical term from the circus and describes a type of dressage , usually with horses , which has nothing to do with riding like the high school , but from the ground only with whip , voice and Hand signal is directed ( groundwork ). Lunge or auxiliary reins are only needed at the beginning.

One of the simplest lessons is lunging (running in a circle) in a ring or round pen . Freedom training without locomotion includes compliments (bowing) , kneeling , sitting , lying and plié .

Freedom dressage includes gaits that also play a role in dressage , such as piaffe , passage , Spanish step . In the circus, one often sees spectacular actions in groups such as the counter-country skiing (both clockwise and counterclockwise), the roller skating or pirouette , also climbing (lifting of the front legs) or Waltz (turning on the spot). The accompanying music plays an essential role. Because the horses cannot follow the music, the circus music has to adapt to the horses.

The freedom dressage is traditionally one of the most important circus acts. Frieda Sembach-Krone (1915–1995) and Fredy Knie senior (1920–2003) were among the masters of the trade .
