List of apple varieties

The Berlepsch , Freiherr von Berlepsch or Goldrenette Freiherr von Berlepsch is a cultivar of the cultivated apple (Malus domestica) .

description

Berlepsch is an old apple variety: it was bred by Diedrich Uhlhorn junior in 1880 and is considered one of his best apple varieties. It was named after the then Düsseldorf District President Hans Hermann Freiherr von Berlepsch .

It is a table apple (i.e. intended for raw consumption) that keeps its flavor qualities for months and is therefore very easy to store . The taste of the firm, yellowish-white pulp is "very juicy, refreshing, extraordinarily strongly flavored". With its high vitamin C content of 23.5 mg per 100 g, the Berlepsch is one of the ten apple varieties with the highest vitamin C proportions. The fruits are medium-sized: 5–6 cm high and 6–7 cm wide. Their basic color is greenish-yellow to yellow, the surface color goes to brown-red. The marbling is noticeable, but the numerous light brown points ( lenticels ) on the shell are rather inconspicuous. There is a more red-colored mutant, the "red Berlepsch".

In cultivation it thrives best in very mild locations; in unfavorable locations the tree is susceptible to fruit tree cancer , peak drought ( monilia ) and collar rot . At first it has a strong tree development, so that annual pruning is necessary. The flowering time is from the end of April to mid-May and is therefore late and long-lasting. The apples are ready for harvest from the end of September to mid-October. The maturity period runs from the beginning of January to the end of March.
