French Exit is a tragic comedy by Azazel Jacobs , which is expected to be shown for the first time in October 2020 as the closing film of the New York Film Festival . The film is based on the novel of the same name by Patrick deWitt .

Frances Price was once very rich and well known in New York. After the death of her husband and the bankruptcy, the widow decides to move to Paris with her son Malcolm in the empty Parisian apartment of her friend. They also take Small Frank, the cat, with them. This is her born-again husband. In Paris, Frances and Malcolm deal with their past and make plans for their future.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Patrick deWitt from 2018, who also adapted it for the film. "French Exit", the title of the film, also known as "French Leave" as a phrase, is a slang term for getting out of an engagement or another situation without warning and without saying goodbye. Directed by Azazel Jacobs .

Michelle Pfeiffer plays the widow Frances Price, Lucas Hedges her son Malcolm Price. Tracy Letts lends his voice to Small Frank.

Filming started in October 2019. Recordings were made in Paris and Montreal . The two-time Emmy-nominated Tobias Datum acted as cameraman .

On October 11, 2020, French Exit will be shown as the closing film of the New York Film Festival.
