Freschta Kohistani

Freschta Kohistani (born 1991 ; died December 24, 2020 near Kabul in the Kapisa province ) was an Afghan politician and civil rights activist . In its obituary, Deutsche Welle calls her “a champion for women's rights in Afghanistan”.

Live and act

Kohistani was a member of the provincial council. She campaigned for Abdullah Abdullah in the 2019 presidential election . She has been able to build a relatively large following on social media. She used this attention to raise awareness of violence against women. She also regularly organized civil society events in Kabul in which she campaigned for women's rights.

Kohistani lamented the hopeless situation in her home country in the face of violence and attacks. In 2020 she wrote: “Afghanistan is not a place to live. There is no hope of peace. Tell the tailor to take your measurements, because tomorrow could be your turn. "

Kohistani was assassinated on December 24, 2020 by armed attackers on a motorcycle, in which her brother was also killed. The attack is counted among a number of similar cases of high-ranking civil rights activists, politicians and journalists in the days and weeks before who were in opposition to the Taliban . She leaves behind her husband and a child.
