The Freshfield Nunatak is a 1450 m high and isolated nunatak in the East Antarctic Coatsland . In the Shackleton Range it rises southeast of the Herbert Mountains .
Aerial photographs were taken in 1967 by the United States Navy ; the British Antarctic Survey carried out measurements of the Nunatak between 1968 and 1971. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named him in 1972 after the British geographer and mountaineer Douglas William Freshfield (1845-1934), who was active in the Caucasus and the Himalayas and from 1914 to 1917 President of the Royal Geographical Society .
