The Herbert Mountains are a striking group of rocky mountain peaks in the East Antarctic Coatsland . They are in the center of the Shackleton Range . They are bounded in the north by the Slessor Glacier and Mount Sheffield , in the east by Bernhardi Heights , in the south by the Shotton snowfield and in the west by the Gordon Glacier . From north to south, they include the Charpentier Pyramid , the Maclaren Monolith , Venetz Peak and Mount Absalom .
They were first mapped in October 1957 by participants in the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958) under the direction of British polar explorer Vivian Fuchs . They are named after Edwin Savory Herbert (1899–1973), chairman of the finance committee and member of the management committee of this research trip . The first aerial photographs were taken by the United States Navy in 1967. Geodesists of the British Antarctic Survey carried out a complete survey at Halley Station between 1968 and 1971.
