The Maclaren Monolith is a mountain in the East Antarctic Coatsland . It rises around 1000 m (according to British data 1400 m ) high in the Herbert Mountains of the Shackleton Range and has a monolithic peak.
It was photographed from the air in 1967 by the United States Navy . The British Antarctic Survey conducted the geodetic survey between 1968 and 1971. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1971 after the Scottish naturalist Charles Maclaren (1782–1866), who in 1861 was the first to recognize the influence of glacier activity on sea level.
