The Freudensee , formerly Hammerweiher , is a lake in the Lower Bavarian Hauzenberg in the district of Passau and has an area of 7.14 hectares. It is up to 4.5 meters deep.
The lake was used in the 19th century as a reservoir for the local blacksmiths to set the hammers and other tools of the blacksmith in motion. After the hammer forge approved in 1589, the lake was initially called Hammerweiher . After the forge was closed in the 1970s, the energy obtained from the reservoir is used to generate electricity with the help of a small turbine.
Nowadays the lake is a destination for excursions in both summer and winter. A 1.65 kilometer circular route is available for joggers and walkers. Freudensee Castle is located above the lake . The lake and its surroundings are located in the 12.8 hectare nature reserve protection of the Freudensee and parts of the landscape around the Freudensee .
