history

To mark the 500th anniversary of the accession of the canton of Friborg to Switzerland , an exhibition of contemporary art was held in the city of Friborg in 1981. The organizers of this exhibition then pursued the goal of being able to establish a permanent facility for modern art in the city of Freiburg. Fri Art opened on November 10, 1990 with a performance by Irish artist Tara Babel and films by Roman Signer .

The museum was headed by Michel Ritter from 1990 to 2002 , by Sarah Zürcher from 2002 to 2007 and then by Corinne Charpentier until the end of 2012. Balthazar Lovay (* 1978) was artistic director from 2013 to 2019. Nicolas Brulhart has been artistic director since June 2019.
