Friday Night in San Francisco is an album by Al Di Meola , John McLaughlin, and Paco de Lucía , recorded at the Warfield Theater of San Francisco on December 5, 1980 and released in 1981. The commercially successful genre classic is considered the best-known live acoustic guitar album of all.

Creation of the album

As early as 1979 and 1980, McLaughlin and de Lucia undertook a European tour with guitarist Larry Coryell , and McLaughlin would have liked to publish their recordings. His record company Columbia Records was of the opinion that Coryell was too unknown as a guitarist for an album to be released with him as a participant. In addition, Coryell could not advocate publication due to private problems. When the tour continued in America in 1980, McLaughlin replaced Coryell with Di Meola.

The inclusion of Friday Night in San Francisco was established on December 5, 1980 live at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. The production-related positioning of the three guitarists in the stereo image is unusual : for better observation of the individual players, they were placed far apart in the stereo image, with John McLaughlin being heard in the middle of the trio recordings. Furthermore, the recording captures the mood of the audience, who acknowledged particularly successful passages of the performances with applause and cheers, which is rather unusual in classical acoustic guitar concerts.

The total of five tracks on the album contain expansive, improvised passages in which the trio ironically quotes other music titles and styles. McLaughlin and Di Meola, for example, lapse into an improvised version of the Pink Panther Theme by Henry Mancini or play a blues scheme . The James Bond theme by Monty Norman is also briefly alluded to.

Release history

The recording was first released in 1981 as LP and MC; In the same year audiophile pressings with half-speed mastering appeared in the USA and Japan . The album was first released on CD in 1982 and on Super Audio CD for the first time in 2007 . The album has sold over 2 million times worldwide.
