Fridolf Albert Ferdinand Kudlien (born November 23, 1928 in Berlin ; † February 2, 2008 in Kiel ) was a German classical philologist and medical historian .

Life

Fridolf Kudlien received his doctorate on October 1, 1958 at the Humboldt University in Berlin , his dissertation was on the subject of the handwritten transmission of the Galenkommentar zu Hippocrates 'De articulis' . It was suggested by Konrad Schubring as part of the Corpus Medicorum Graecorum (CMG) and examined by Johannes Irmscher and Werner Hartke after submission in the summer of 1957. It was one of several works that arose as part of a working group of the CMG , which is based at the German Academy of Sciences , as preparatory work for a planned critical edition of Galen's De articulis .

Shortly before the Wall was built in 1961, Kudlien moved to Würzburg, where he worked as an assistant at the Institute for the History of Medicine at Julius Maximilians University . In 1963 he completed his habilitation at the University of Kiel and was appointed private lecturer in 1964, Scientific Councilor and Associate Professor in 1966, and Full Professor of the History of Medicine in 1970. He had been a corresponding member of the International Academy of the History of Medicine since 1966.

Kudlien's main research interests were ancient medicine, the role of medicine in National Socialism and ancient social history. In these areas he has contributed various articles to Pauly-Wissowa and Little Pauly .
