Friederike Luise Löffler (born August 9, 1744 in Kürnbach as Friederike Herbord, also known as "Löfflerin"; † December 20, 1805 in Stuttgart ) was housekeeper at the court of Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg and cook of the Württemberg countryside . She wrote a cookbook that was revolutionary for her time and had 38 editions between 1791 and 1930 .

Life

Friederike Herbord came from a well-known Württemberg family. Her parents were the pharmacist Friedrich Christoph Herbord and Maria Herbord nee Scholl. It is assumed that Friederike Herbord learned the kitchen of her hometown Kürnbach, where the Baden and Württemberg food cultures came together, in the Drei Mohren tavern, which was in the same building as her father's pharmacy. She also often visited her uncle in Bietigheim , who had a prosperous inn and was reputed to be a top chef.

Little is known about Herbord's life. After her first job with the Secret Council of Hopfer, she took up a position at the court of Duke Carl Eugen in Württemberg around 1770. On August 12, 1779 she married Johann Friedrich Löffler, trumpeter and timpanist of the ducal guards on horseback, "without a proclamation , in silence and by virtue of lordly orders" . Shortly after the marriage, the couple had a daughter, Henriette Rosine. Friederike Löffler had a total of seven children.

At the time of the marriage, Löffler was the “manorial decision maker ” (housekeeper) at the ducal court. Later, the exact time is not known, she also became a "landscape cook", that is, cook for the duchy members of the duchy who dine together, who were called landscapes.

At the end of the 18th century, there were no instructions for the preparation of varied and tasty dishes that were suitable for a cook in a middle-class private household. Löffler, who ran an inn in Stuttgart in the 1780s, recognized the niche in the market and in 1791 published the New Cookbook or verified instructions for tasty preparation of dishes, baked goods, confectionery, frozen and preserved foods at the antiquarian Johann Christoph Betulius in Stuttgart . The cookbook became a "bestseller of the century". The success of the cookbook was based on the fact that Löffler had actually tried all of the recipes himself. She vouched for the easy and successful re-cookability of her recipes and paid attention to precise information. Löffler used numerous French terms in the recipes, the pronunciation of which she noted in brackets. The structure of the cookbook followed the menu sequence at the table.

In 1801 Löffler published a second volume, now with Verlag Johann Friedrich Steinkopf , the successor to Betulius. The entire work was now called the Economic Handbook for Women . The second volume dealt with “the remaining knowledge which is particularly useful to the fair sex and which is appropriate to its professional business. Treatises on women's housework, household items and beauty products, along with an appendix on food and drinks for the sick, on the diet of child mothers-to-be, and a treatise on the upbringing of children in the first years of life. "

When Löffler died in 1805, four editions of her cookbook had already appeared and she had prepared the fifth herself. Up until 1930, Steinkopf-Verlag had published 38 editions, plus many pirated prints and loans from other publishers. The successful cookbook for the doll kitchen of Julie Bimbach was based explicitly on Loffler's book.

Her daughter Henriette Löffler, married Huttenlocher, also published a cookbook and used her maiden name for advertising reasons.
