Friederike von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (* July 17, 1715 in Gotha , † May 12, 1775 in Langensalza ) was a princess of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and by marriage the last duchess of Saxe-Weissenfels .

Life

Friederike was a daughter of Duke Friedrich II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1676–1732) from his marriage to Magdalena Augusta (1679–1740), daughter of Prince Karl Wilhelm von Anhalt-Zerbst .

She married Duke Johann Adolf II of Saxony-Weissenfels (1685–1746) in Altenburg on November 27, 1734 . The four sons of this marriage died when they were young children, with which the Sachsen-Weißenfels family died out.

Friederike is buried in the castle church of Weißenfels .

The Friederikenschlösschen

After the death of her husband, she was only 31 years old, Friederike initially moved into her widow's residence in Dryburg Castle in what is now Bad Langensalza, as planned . East of the old town, in front of the city wall, she acquired a bourgeois garden and other properties. From 1749 to 1751 she had the so-called Friederikenschlösschen built there in rococo style . The building has stepped mansard roofs with ornate dormers . Two gentlemen's houses flank the castle. The park has an orangery , a well house and a coach house , which today houses a historic printing house. The entrance portal bears an alliance coat of arms of Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg and Sachsen-Weißenfels.

After the Duchess' death in 1775, her former personal physician Christian Friedrich Stöller bought the property. From 1922 to the 1990s the castle was owned by Ida Mary Fries-Fiscowitsch. Due to private use until 1945, the interior was changed, the exterior was retained. In the 1990s the castle became the property of the city, and between 1994 and 2000 the castle and park were renovated. Based on historical plans, the palace garden was reconstructed in the style of its basic baroque structure from 1751. Since 1946 castles and parks have been used for cultural events, but also for weddings.
