Friedhelm Ottfried Goepel (born March 15, 1928 in Essen ; † June 20, 2013 there ) was a German artist and art educator in Essen.

Life

Friedhelm Goepel was the only child of the married couple Eleonore Goepel, nee. Hoffmann, and Otto Goepel, industrial foremen, born in Essen. After attending primary school at the Getrudiskirche, he attended the Humboldt Gymnasium in Essen and was drafted into military service as an anti-aircraft helper in 1944 . After the end of the war, he graduated from the Humboldt Gymnasium in 1947.

From 1947 to 1949 Goepel attended the painting class of Josef van Heekern in Essen, who was chairman of the forerunner of the Ruhrländischer Künstlerbund . From 1950 to 1954 Goepel studied painting and graphic design at the Folkwang School in Essen, the Düsseldorf Art Academy and the University of Cologne . In Düsseldorf he studied together with the artists Heinz Mack , Günther Uecker and Otto Piene . In 1963 this was followed by a joint exhibition with the Zero group at the Diogenes Gallery in Berlin. In 1953 Friedhelm Goepel became a member of the Ruhrland Artists Association.

After completing his art and work studies in 1955, Goepel began teaching as an art teacher. He had studied geography as a second subject in Cologne , but worked exclusively as an art teacher until 1990, first at the Burggymnasium Essen , and from 1959 at the Helmholtz-Gymnasium Essen .

Goepel had been with Mrs. Rosemarie, geb. Weller, married and had two sons. He died in 2013 after giving up artistic work a few years earlier due to increasing dementia .

In addition to his full-time activity, Friedhelm Goepel created an extensive range of paintings and graphics. Today there are around a hundred large-format works on hardboard , wood and linen as well as around 400 sheets of graphics, drawings and linocut prints . His creative work can be divided into four phases:

  • Academy time 1949–1954: Landscapes, still lifes , nude drawings , calligraphy
  • Abstract phase 1955–1967: rhythms, city impressions, free compositions
  • Graphic phase 1968–1990: color and shape design, graphic experiments
  • Concrete Surrealism 1990–2005: still lifes , portraits , family impressions, beach and sea scenes

In addition to painting and graphics , Goepel also deals with jewelry design and photography .
