location

The cemetery is at the corner of the monastery park and Waldstrasse in the so-called "monastery wood" on the northeast edge of the landscape park that begins here . The entire area, enclosed by quarry stone walls, runs along a wall to the abandoned Althaldensleben Castle , behind which the Althaldensleben monastery is located, and covers an area of around 8,000 square meters. The burial area in the southern part of the complex itself is rectangular, surrounded by a hedge and about 500 square meters in size.

history

Johann Gottlob Nathusius had the cemetery laid out in 1829 on the occasion of the burial of his son Gottlob Nathusius (1813–1829). He was buried here in 1835 and his wife Luise in 1875. When the Althaldensleben monastery was sold in 1893, the cemetery area was excluded; At that time, an entrance gate was inserted into the existing wall on the street side and the separating wall to the old castle was built. The cemetery was not expropriated even during the GDR era . The burial site is still used by the family; around 50 family members have been buried in Althaldensleben so far. In addition to Johann Gottlob Nathusius and his sons Gottlob and Heinrich, his daughter Johanne Philippine Nathusius was also buried here.

The graves are simple and uniform. The entire complex was kept close to nature - with sycamore planting, among other things . In addition to the sandstone gravestones, a stone cemetery cross (inscription: “Death is swallowed up in victory”) and later a wooden memorial plaque for those who died in the First World War were erected in 1877 . The cemetery is not open to the public.

Other members of the Nathusius family are buried in the nearby park of Hundisburger Castle (Olga von Nathusius and Erika von Eichborn) and in the cemetery of the Protestant St. Andrew's Church in Hundisburg .

Foundation, endowment

In 1910, a foundation was registered with the royal district court in Neuhaldensleben, which has maintained the cemetery since then: “Althaldenslebener hereditary burial of the family v. Nathusius ”. The founder at the time was named after the twelve children of the late Heinrich von Nathusius, his son Simon von Nathusius . It is a foundation under civil law , which also includes the adjacent historic hunter's house in Althaldensleben. The foundation is supervised by the state administration office of Saxony-Anhalt .
