Panzergraben cemetery and memorial
Panzergraben Cemetery and Memorial (formerly Panzergraben Memorial ) is the name given to a memorial in memory of 27 German soldiers and customs border guards who were killed there on April 14, 1945, a few days before the end of World War II, in battles with French troops. The French troops themselves also suffered losses; 49 French soldiers died. The memorial is located south of the Rheinau district of Memprechtshofen in the Freistett district .
Since 1963, a meeting organized by the NPD Regional Association Karlsruhe has been held there on Memorial Day. In 2006, 100 participants took part, including right-wing radical skinheads . Contrary to previous agreements with the police, the participants marched across the federal highway as a black block and displayed Reich war flags. The police were on site with a police helicopter and a hundred to prevent violent riots and counter-demonstrators disturbing the event. In 2007, for the first time, a counter-event with the motto “Rheinau is colorful instead of brown - For peace, tolerance and international understanding” took place under the leadership of the DGB . Shortly before the NPD event, strangers painted the memorial.
The following year the NPD also held an event, now with stricter requirements (for example, a ban on uniform parts and combat boots ). In addition, the memorial was included in the Rheinau cemetery regulations on September 17, 2007. Political events at the Panzergraben itself are then no longer permitted.
On September 3, 2010, the 4-meter-high stone cross was destroyed by previously unknown perpetrators. In May 2011 a new cross was erected. As a result of demonstrations triggered by the debate, the City Rheinau called the monument of Memorial tank ditches in the cemetery and memorial tank ditch around.
