Friedrich Aepinus (born in the 16th century in Hamburg , † 1608 probably in Ratzeburg ) was a German chancellery and chamber secretary.

Live and act

Friedrich Aepinus was a son of the theologian Johannes Aepinus and his wife, who died in 1549, who was perhaps called Gertrud Schmedes. He completed a law degree in 1553 at the University of Wittenberg , in August 1554 as "Hamburgensis" at the University of Rostock and from 1554/55 back in Wittenberg without a doctorate. From 1575 he worked for Duke Franz I of Saxony-Lauenburg and also worked there as chamber and chancellery secretary during a dynastically not very stable time of the house. In 1581 he was appointed President of the Ratzeburg City Court. He left politics in 1591.

Since Aepinus had finished his studies without a title, he could not reach the highest office of Chancellor in the administration. Instead he became secretary and in this position achieved great influence in politics and legislation in the Duchy of Saxony-Lauenburg. He was helped by the fact that he was both chamber secretary and office secretary . He served as office secretary to Chancellor Hieronymus Schultze (also from Hamburg) , and as chamber secretary directly to the Duke. Schultze was also in the service of Duke Adolf von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf in Schleswig. This enabled Aepinus to mediate in conflicts between the chancellor and the duke as both employers.

Aepinus belonged with the finance college to the most important body of the indebted duchy. This enabled him to assess the economic situation in the region. As President of the City Court, he dealt with judicial and legal matters. During the reign of Duke Franz II from 1581 to 1619, he developed into a renowned advisor to the Duke due to his knowledge of the principality. He wrote for Franz II expert reports on how positions in the chancellery could be deleted and assessed the basic tasks of the so-called councils.

Aepinus achieved particular importance in the area of legislation. He designed a police order for the city of Ratzeburg that was applied from 1582 and one for Ratzeburg from 1585 to 1590, which did not come into force until 1599. His greatest work was the draft of a police order for the Duchy of Saxony-Lauenburg. He dealt not only with police law, but also marriage, inheritance and civil law and litigation. The Duke assessed the texts finalized in 1591 positively, but never applied them. The reason for this is unclear.

Aepinus worked extremely detailed and concrete. In terms of content, his drafts were similar to many draft laws from other regions.

Aepinus was married to Heilwig von Brocken . The couple had ten children, including their son Franz. He attended Rostock University in 1606 and worked as a pastor in Bargteheide from 1617 to 1639 .
