Friedrich Arenhövel (born February 14, 1886 in Bergedorf ; † April 16, 1954 in Sellin ) was a German writer and broadcast director under the National Socialists .

Life

Arenhövel was head of the literature department in the Kampfbund for German culture . In 1932, the children's and youth literature historian Hermann Leopold Köster listed Arenhövel as representative alongside other German and non-German authors in the magazine Die Jugendschriften-Warte , although he subsequently disappeared from the children's and youth literature market.

On April 23, 1933, at the instigation of this organization, he was accepted into the PEN Club , which had been brought into line by the Nazis . In October 1933, he and 87 other writers, including Gottfried Benn , signed the pledge of loyal allegiance to Adolf Hitler .

Arenhövel was an employee of the NSDAP newspaper Völkischer Beobachter and the "Gauzeitung" of the Berlin NSDAP The Attack, founded and edited by Joseph Goebbels . On Goebbels' orders, the hitherto hapless novelist Arenhövel was initially acting director in April 1933, and from September 19, 1933 director of the oldest German radio station, Funk-Hour Berlin . It only kept him in the post for a year. He was released on March 1, 1934; it was officially said that he had taken time off work so that he could devote himself to writing. His successor as director of the Berlin broadcaster was Walther Beumelburg from Süddeutsche Rundfunk AG .

Jochen Klepper on Arenhövel as director

When Arenhövel was director of broadcasting in Berlin, one of the most versatile employees was the journalist and song composer Jochen Klepper . Klepper's activities at the station ranged from "LvD" (head of service) to radio play director. He wrote about the encounters with Arenhövel in his diary:

April 20, 1933 . The new director is now at work.
April 25 . The general manager received the denunciation three hours before the broadcast began: I was a member of the SPD . I would have made the statement myself: I would be one of the first to leave. Jewish family. - Denounce as effectively as possible: namely through the Reich Association of National Socialist Radio Listeners.
May 26th . Now the sword of Damocles of denunciation is over. The director Arenhövel knows that I was a social democrat and that I have a Jewish wife. - His answer: Close friends of his would also be religious socialists; that doesn't bother him at all. My marriage is my business. But for her sake my contract has to be postponed, and my name is rarely allowed to appear in the programs.
June 1st . Appointed to the artistic director Arenhövel, since a request from the Propaganda Ministry has now also arrived directly, this time with the following "charges": Jewish family, member of the editorial team of " Vorwärts ". I now have a memorandum to submit. Arenhövel, who was very friendly, told me: “The decision rests solely with the Propaganda Ministry. For my own sake, I will highlight you as a man whose cooperation we value. "
June 5th . Braun and Arenhövel struggled to persevere in the radio .
June 7th . When I got to the radio, I was appointed to the director, who briefly informed me that I had to stop work immediately and leave the radio "until my matter was finally settled."
