Friedrich August Vogt (born July 24, 1812 in Aschaffenburg , † April 22, 1893 in Würzburg ) was a German medic .

Life

After attending grammar school in Würzburg, Friedrich August Vogt studied medicine at the University of Würzburg from 1828 to 1832 . In 1830 he became a member of the Corps Moenania . He then completed internships in Munich and Vienna clinics. In 1833 he was promoted to Dr. med. doctorate, in 1834 he passed the medical state examination.

In 1835 he took a position as an assistant at the regional and city court physician in Aschaffenburg with the permission to practice medicine, surgery and obstetrics in Aschaffenburg. From 1836 to 1853 he was the official, hospital and poor doctor position. In 1853 he became a district court doctor in Gemünden am Main and in 1856 in Würzburg. In 1861 he was promoted to district court doctor. As a coroner , he enjoyed the highest professional reputation. In 1874 he was appointed District Medical Councilor in Würzburg and was thus responsible for the entire medical system in Lower Franconia .

Vogt wrote several publications in the field of forensic medicine and state medicine. In 1867 he publicly criticized the measures taken by the state government against the spread of cholera . In 1869 he entered into a scientific dispute with Max von Pettenkofer , the recognized authority in Germany regarding the spread of epidemics, as Vogt argued that cholera was not transmitted through contact with the ground, as postulated by Pettenkofer, but through direct contact between people would. Only in 1883 with the discovery of the vibrio cholerae could Pettenkofer's theory be invalidated.

Vogt advocated the prescription of natural remedies instead of expensive drugs in the medical profession. After his retirement he devoted himself to botanical subjects.
