Friedrich Bokelmann (born April 18, 1868 in Herford ; † January 27, 1941 there ) was a German electrical engineer and entrepreneur. Bokelmann gained fame through the development of the electric bell ringer .

Life

After reaching the secondary school leaving certificate in Herford studied Bokelmann at the TH-Charlottenburg the new subject Electrical Engineering . In 1892 he opened his company F. Bokelmann, Ingenieur, Herford in Elisabethstraße and installed a dynamo machine (65 volts, 6 amps) that he designed and built in the Tidgemeyer printing house on the Neuer Markt, powered by a 1 HP gas engine was driven. The electricity thus obtained was used to supply 8 light bulbs to illuminate the workshop, shop and shop window. After business hours, the same machine was used to generate electricity for the arc lamp in a neighboring restaurant. This first public lighting laid the foundation for the construction of our own power station , which already in 1902 supplied around 200 connections for light and 100 motors built in our own factory. A little later, Bokelmann supplied many places in the vicinity of Herford with electrical energy .

Bokelmann's big breakthrough came with his best-known invention of connecting an electric motor to a church bell via a chain and rope wheel . Within a few years the company "Herford Electricity Works, Bokelmann and Kuhlo" grew to a considerable size. 15,000 bells all over the world were moved with Herford chimes . They can also be found in secular manor houses and mansions. For his invention, Bokelmann was honored by the Pope in 1929 and made a Knight of the Order of St. Silvester . The highest cathedral chapter in Cologne awarded him a diploma for ringing the Great German Bell on the Rhine . Bokelmann also provided the Berlin Cathedral , St. Thomas Church in Leipzig and the Kreuzkirche in Dresden with a bell.
