Friedrich Duge

Friedrich Wilhelm Johann Duge (born August 20, 1856 in Mecklenburg ; † June 2, 1927 in Cuxhaven ) was a German port inspector and fisheries director.

biography

Duge grew up in Mecklenburg . In Wilhelmshaven he worked as a naval pilot in the 1880s. Until 1907 he was the port inspector of the fishing port I in Geestemünde, which was built from 1891 to 1896 .

In 1906 the Hamburg Senate commissioned him to draw up an expert opinion on the construction of a sea fish market in Cuxhaven. In October 1907 he became the head of the new fish market as a fisheries inspector. In 1908, as director of fisheries, he founded the committee for the establishment of the Cuxhaven seaman's mission, which set up a seaman's home for the fishing port of Cuxhaven .

After the First World War he managed to quickly resume port operations in 1918/19. Then Duge took over the office of fisheries director in Hamburg. He returned to Cuxhaven in 1922 after his retirement. His successor in Cuxhaven was Johann Meinken (1881–1941) in 1919.

The Fisheries Biological collection of Friedrich Duge was in the North Sea Museum (Bremerhaven) ; the museum has been incorporated into the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven.

Duge was married, the doctor Bruno Duge, Mayor of Cuxhaven in 1956, was his son.

Honors

  • In 1928 a street on Dugekai at the southern end of the old fishing port in Cuxhaven was named after him.
