Friedrich Eduard von Rheineck

Baron Friedrich Eduard von Rheineck ( Greek Φρήντριχ Έντουαρντ Ράινεκ ; born November 2, 1796 in Potsdam ; † October 26, 1854 in Athens , Greece ) was a Prussian cavalry officer and philhellene .

Life

Rheineck initially fought against Napoleon Bonaparte in the Prussian Army during the Wars of Liberation . In 1822 he brought funds from German associations in Koblenz for the Greek War of Independence to Corinth . As an adjutant to Alexandros Mavrokordatos , he took part in the defense of Mesolongi against the Ottomans , which is why he became famous in Greece and was appointed colonel of the Greek army .

In June 1828 he was sent to Crete by Ioannis Kapodistrias with an army . He was head of the Revolutionary Council in Crete until September 1829. The Greek poet Michael Chourmouzis was among his fighters .

On April 20, 1832 he became head of the Academy of the Greek Armed Forces. In February 1840, meanwhile promoted to major general, he left the Academy for being appointed chairman of the Military Court of Appeals . He died in Athens on October 26, 1854 and was buried in the Athens cemetery.

Around 1830, Friedrich Eduard von Rheineck married Efrosini Mavrokordatos (* February 14, 1800, † January 4, 1885), the sister of Alexandros Mavrokordatos. They had five children:
