Friedrich Ernst Carl Mereau
Friedrich Ernst Carl Mereau (born April 11, 1765 in Gotha ; † May 18, 1825 in Jena ) was a German legal scholar, librarian, judge and university professor.
Life
Mereau studied law and philosophy at the University of Jena and graduated with a master's degree in philosophy and a Dr. jur. from. He initially became an attorney at the Court of Justice in Jena and librarian at the university library .
In 1795 he became ao. Professor of Law and received a full professorship in Jena in 1800. In 1803 Mereau was appointed commissioner and bailiff in Themar , 1806 senior bailiff in Saalfeld .
From there he reported in writing to the sovereign Duke Ernst I about French troop movements during the French era . This news was intercepted and Mereau was sentenced to death as a spy by a French court martial. However, he succeeded in being represented as a lodge brother to the French military judges, who probably also belonged to lodges, to have the proceedings reopened and the acquittal.
He died of pneumonia after a lengthy judicial activity.

Mereau's first marriage from 1793 to the romantic poet Sophie Mereau , who divorced him in 1801, was unhappy . In 1801 he married the daughter of the manufacturer Herold in his second marriage.
