Friedrich Hübener (born August 7, 1882 in Kiel , † May 4, 1966 in Königstein im Taunus ) was a German university professor for mechanical engineering and rector of the TH Darmstadt .

Life

Friedrich Hübener was born in August 1882 as the son of a factory owner in Kiel. After graduating from high school, he first worked in the Daevel und Hübener company in 1902/03. From the winter semester of 1903 he studied mechanical engineering at the TH Berlin. The studies were interrupted by employment at the companies Hübener in Kiel (1909-1911), Schlösser in Düsseldorf (1911-1912) and Demag in Duisburg (1912-1913) as well as by military service in the Navy during World War I. From 1913 until the outbreak of war, Hübener was also Otto Kammerer's assistant at the Institute for Conveyor Technology at the TH Berlin-Charlottenburg . In January 1918 he finally graduated with the title of graduate engineer. Hübener then first became a designer and from 1919 a senior engineer at the aforementioned institute. In 1924 he obtained his doctorate in engineering under Otto Kammerer.

On January 23, 1930, he took up a professorship for materials handling technology and lifting machines in the mechanical engineering department of the TH Darmstadt. He thus succeeded Georg Wilhelm Köhler , who died unexpectedly in July 1929. The institute's premises were in the old main building of the TH. After the rooms were almost completely destroyed by a bomb attack on September 11, 1944, Hübener and his assistants moved into the rooms of the mayor's office of Groß-Bieberau .

Friedrich Hübener, who belonged to the German People's Party from 1925 to 1930 , finally joined the NSDAP on May 1, 1937 after the membership ban was relaxed . He was previously a sponsoring member of the SS . From October 1, 1934 to October 31, 1937, Hübener was rector of the TH Darmstadt. He had been proposed by Hans Busch and appointed by Gauleiter Jakob Sprenger , as the preferred candidate Otto Stocker refused the office. In his inaugural address on November 1, 1934, he expressed his support for the goals of the Nazi regime. Together with Vice Rector Karl Lieser , a member of the NSDAP since 1933 , Hübener ran the university in accordance with the National Socialist guidelines. This also included the dismissal or removal of numerous members from the university.

During his term of office, the lavish "centenary" of the TH, which was celebrated in May 1936 with swastika flags on the buildings of the TH, also fell. From 1937 until the university closed at the end of March 1945, Huebner was prorector of the TH Darmstadt. In return, Lieser took over the office of rector.

Like numerous other professors at the TH Darmstadt, Hübener was dismissed from service in autumn 1945. For Hübener, this was obvious because of his long work in the management of the university but also because of his function as defense officer at the TH Darmstadt. However, he was still employed by the university as a technical assistant. In the denazification process in 1947, Hübener was initially classified as a minor . The Spruchkammer finally classified him as a follower . Several attempts by Hübener to obtain an appointment were unsuccessful. He retired in 1952. Until his successor took up his duties in November 1953, he held the professorship on a temporary basis.

Friedrich Hübener died at the age of 83 in Königstein im Taunus. He was married to Elise Cernov since 1915.
