Friedrich Kraus (born May 27, 1826 on Gut Adlig Deutsch Crottingen near Memel , † September 28, 1894 in Berlin ) was a German painter .
life and work
Kraus attended the high school in Königsberg and began his artistic studies at the academy there in around the 19th year. He later studied in Berlin and stayed in Paris from 1852 to 1854 , where he visited Thomas Couture's atelier . The following year he is in Rome and then moves to Berlin. He preferred to depict the contemporary life of the higher classes, especially that of women, in genre pictures .
His pictures are felt to be empathetic and lovable and, depending on the subject, sometimes wider and stronger, sometimes carried out with elegant cleanliness.
His most famous works are:

- City news,
- Mayor Six's visit to Rembrandt ,
- Titian and his lover,
- Morning round,
- The nursery,
- In the boudoir,
- The awakening bacchante.
He also painted numerous elegant portraits (Count and Countess Lehndorff) and was elected a member of the Academy of Arts in 1885 .
Friedrich Kraus died in Berlin in 1894 at the age of 68 and was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.
