Life

Krefter graduated from the Schillergymnasium in Münster in 1917 . The focus of his archaeological work was in Pasargadae and Persepolis / Iran. He stayed for the first time in Iran in 1928 as assistant to Ernst Herzfeld , one of the most famous German Near Eastern archaeologists, ancient orientalists and epigraphers in Pasargadae. From 1931 to 1934 he was the latter's deputy on the Persepolis excavation site, and found the silver and gold founding documents of Darius I on September 18 and 20, 1933.In the spring of 1934, he took over the management of the excavation until he was replaced by Erich Schmidt in May 1935 .

From 1962 to 1971 Friedrich Krefter was commissioned by the Federal Government of the Federal Republic of Germany to reconstruct Persepolis in drawings and in a model. The 1: 200 scale model was presented to Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in 1967 on the occasion of his coronation. Another model in the scale 1: 1000 is in the Vorderasiatisches Museum Berlin .

At the age of 91, he gave his last public lecture in 1989 in the Landesmuseum Mainz on the occasion of the special exhibition "Persepolis - A World Wonder of Antiquity", which was dedicated to him on his 90th birthday and which was first shown in Munich. In 1991 his last scientific work appeared: “The blue shoes” on the topic of coloring in Persepolis in the series Archaeological Messages from Iran , which his former mentor Ernst Herzfeld founded in 1929.
