Leo Trümpelmann

Leo Alexander Trümpelmann (born September 1, 1931 in Leipzig , † August 15, 1989 in Munich ) was a German archaeologist from the Near East .

Life

Leo Trümpelmann attended the St. Thomas School in Leipzig from 1942 to 1949 and studied Classical Archeology at the University of Münster from 1952 . In 1959 he was at Max Wegner with a dissertation on the desert castle Mshatta Dr. phil. PhD . For 1960/61 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . He then worked from October 1, 1961 to September 30, 1965 as a consultant at the newly established Tehran branch of the German Archaeological Institute .

After his return to Germany, Trümpelmann worked as an assistant at the Institute for Near Eastern Antiquity at the Free University of Berlin , at the chair of Anton Moortgat , which Barthel Hrouda took over in 1967 . He was followed Trümpelmann 1969 to the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich , where he joined in 1974 with a study of Ancient Near Eastern hunting scenes habilitated and was appointed on May 16, 1974 extraordinary professor of Near Eastern archeology.

Trümpelmann's scientific work includes studies of Parthian and Sassanid rock reliefs, later graves in Iran and terracotta from Babylon. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he led the excavations at Tell Abqaʿ in the Hamrin Mountains , which took on the character of emergency excavations when the First Gulf War broke out .
