Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Martersteig , also Mardersteig (born March 11, 1814 in Weimar ; † September 6, 1899 there ), was a German history and genre painter and drawing teacher. He himself changed his name to Mardersteig in 1874.

Life

Friedrich Martersteig received art lessons at the free drawing school in Weimar from 1822 . A training grant from Weimar Grand Duke Carl Friedrich then enabled him to study at the Dresden Art Academy (1829-1834), where he was taught by Ludwig Richter . Martersteig made copies of Old Masters in the Dresden Picture Gallery as part of his studies. His studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy between 1834 and 1838 were also financed by a training grant . There he was a student of Carl Ferdinand Sohn , Theodor Hildebrandt and Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow .

From 1838 to 1848 Martersteig stayed in Paris to continue his artistic studies. There he was a student in Paul Delaroche's studio and in Ary Scheffer 's studio . This was followed by multiple participation in the Paris Salon and the Berlin Academy Exhibition (1844–1850).

In 1848 Martersteig finally returned to Weimar. During this time he was in contact with the emigrated Duchess of Orléans . He also made an oil painting for the Wartburg on behalf of the Weimar Grand Duke . In 1849 he was made a full member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts and finally appointed professor by the Weimar Grand Duke. From 1853 to 1884 Martersteig was a drawing teacher at the grand ducal Sophienstift in Weimar. In 1862 he was appointed President of the German Art Cooperative .
