In 1887, Friedrich Scharenberg arranged for an area known as Erbsland to be planted in the Granzow district of the Mirow forestry as an arboretum with around 40 foreign tree species in order to test their suitability for German forestry. The Arboretum Erbsland still has over 30 different tree species, some of which reach considerable heights of up to 42 meters. The Erbsland is one of the oldest attempts at forest cultivation in Germany.

"According to the general judgment of contemporary witnesses, Scharenberg was the most capable forest official in the country"
