Friedrich Unzelmann
Friedrich Ludwig Unzelmann (born November 18, 1797 in Berlin , † August 29, 1854 in Vienna ) was a German xylograph .
Life
Unzelmann was the son of the actor Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Unzelmann and his wife Friederike, geb. Flittner . The actor Karl Wolfgang Unzelmann was his brother. After first artistic lessons from his parents, Unzelmann became a student of Friedrich Wilhelm Gubitz in Berlin.
At the age of 46, Unzelmann was accepted as a full member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts in 1843 . Two years later he was appointed professor of woodcutting .
Unzelmann played a key role in the revival of the woodcut as an independent art form in Germany. He achieved his greatest success with woodcuts based on drawings by Adolph von Menzel .
Friedrich Unzelmann died in Berlin in 1854 at the age of 56. He was buried in a family grave on Cemetery II of the Jerusalem and New Churches in front of the Hallesches Tor . He lies there next to his mother Friederike Bethmann, divorced Unzelmann, née. Flittner (1760-1815), and his wife Johanna geb. Schilling (1797-1873). On the plastered wall of the grave there are three marble tablets with the names of the dead. A marble cross on a pedestal stands in front of it. The system is limited at the front by a grille. By resolution of the Berlin Senate , the last resting place of Friedrich Unzelmann has been dedicated as an honorary grave for the State of Berlin since 1980 . The dedication was extended in 2001 by the usual period of twenty years.
