Friedrich W. Hehl

Friedrich Wilhelm Hehl (born August 26, 1937 in Ludwigsburg ) is a German theoretical physicist who mainly deals with gravitational physics.

Life

Hehl studied physics at the Technical University of Stuttgart and became a member of the Corps Stauffia Stuttgart and Germania Hohenheim . In 1966 he received his doctorate at the TU Clausthal ( The spin angular momentum in general relativity ) and his habilitation in 1970 in Clausthal. In 1971 he became a lecturer at the TU Clausthal and in 1975 he was given a full professorship at the University of Cologne . He is a retired professor and adjunct professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia . 1973/74 he was at Princeton University .

He deals in particular with extended formulations of gravity ( going beyond Riemannian geometry ), such as the formulation as gauge field theory (Poincaré Gauge Theory) and (related) Élie Cartan's generalization of Riemann geometry with torsion ( Einstein-Cartan theory ). With Bahram Mashhoon he developed - based on a gauge theory formulation of gravity - a non-local generalization of Einstein's general relativity theory, which is equivalent in a linear approximation to Einstein's theory with dark matter . He also deals with numerical relativity and computer algebra. With Obukhov he wrote a monograph on the (axiomatic) formulation of electrodynamics in differential form calculus.
