The University of Missouri (also known as University of Missouri-Columbia , MU or Mizzou ) is a state university in Columbia in the US state of Missouri . With more than 35,000 students, it is the premier location of the University of Missouri system . The university is a member of the Association of American Universities and is best known for its research and teaching in journalism , law , agriculture, and veterinary medicine . Biotechnology is currently being promoted in particular.
history
The University of Missouri was founded in 1839. Since 1867 women have been admitted to study at the teachers' college, and since 1871 to all courses. African American students have been admitted since a court order in 1950.

Sports
The MU sports team are the Missouri Tigers . On November 6, 2011, the university announced that it would switch from the Big 12 Conference to the Southeastern Conference with a deadline of July 1, 2012.
