He was the son of the pastor and later consistorial councilor Ferdinand Hasenclever and his wife Dorothea (née Schimmel).

He attended the Laurentianum grammar school in Arnsberg . Then he learned the profession of pharmacist. He then studied law and chemistry in Berlin. In 1834 he became an assistant to chemistry professor Eilhard Mitscherlich . A doctorate cannot be proven. He passed the pharmacy exam in Berlin.

From 1836 he was a traveler for the Monheim pharmacy in Aachen. He also worked in the chemical factory operated by Johann Peter Joseph Monheim . He took over a pharmacy in Burtscheid in 1840 . In the same year he married Julie Tilger. He also gave classes in chemistry and physics. In 1842 he moved his pharmacy to Aachen.

In 1850 he founded the chemical factory Waldmeisterhütte in Atsch near Stolberg . Together with Max Braun and Eugène Godin, he founded the Hasenclever & Co. soda factory in 1852. In the same year, he sold his pharmacy in Aachen. The chemical factory Rhenania in Stolberg emerged from the factory Hasenclever & Co. in 1856 . An important company developed under the leadership of Hasenclever. Hasenclever developed a process to produce sulfuric acid from finely powdered zinc blende . There was enough zinc blende in the Stolberg district. The previously common import of sulfur and pebbles became unnecessary. In addition to soda and sulfuric acid, the company has also been producing chlorine barium since 1864 . In 1863 it was possible to regenerate sulfur from the remains of soda production. The company also made hyposulphurous soda , water glass, mineral fertilizers, superphosphate , sulphate and Glauber's salt .

Hasenclever was one of the personalities and entrepreneurs who came together in 1858 to form the “private committee for the establishment of a polytechnic school in Aachen”. Today's RWTH Aachen emerged from this. In 1867 he was a member of the jury at the Paris World's Fair . He was also a colonel in the fire brigade in Burtscheid and Aachen. He was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class.

After the death of Friedrich Wilhelm Hasenclever, his son Robert Hasenclever , who had been with the company for a long time, took over the management of the company.
