Friedrich Wilhelm Jungius
Friedrich Wilhelm Jungius (born June 29, 1771 in Alsleben (Saale) , † December 18, 1819 in Berlin ) was the first German balloonist.
Live and act
Jungius was born the son of a Protestant preacher. He studied the natural sciences in Halle (Saale) , became a teacher in 1799, first at the Alsleben grammar school for scholars and then at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin.
On September 16, 1805, he was the first German to take a ride in a hydrogen balloon in Berlin and rose to an altitude of 6,500 meters, where he passed out. Nevertheless, the trip near Müncheberg ended well. Jungius undertook two more balloon trips, on May 19, 1806 and together with Johann August Zeune on August 19, 1810. During the trips, Jungius made scientific observations.
On December 18, 1819, he died of a lung disease.
