Friedrich von Oertzen (born June 5, 1771 in Rühn ; † February 28, 1848 in Rostock ) was a German lawyer, co-founder and first president of the Mecklenburg Higher Appeal Court.

Life

Friedrich von Oertzen was the youngest son of the chief captain and privy councilor Claus Detloff von Oertzen, a member of the Oertzen and his wife Charlotte Ernestine Juliane born. from Weitershausen . From 1786 he studied law at the University of Bützow , after 1788 in Jena. In spring 1790 went from Oertzen to Göttingen. Here he also finished his studies, which ended in 1791 with an exam in the Rostock law office. In October of the same year he was transferred to Schwerin , from 1802 he was vice director of the local law firm. In 1808 he was appointed a councilor. In 1818 von Oertzen was appointed president of the highest regional court. On 26 June 1830 he was at the "secular celebration of the Augsburg Confession" at the University of Rostock to Dr. hc doctorate. He built up the Higher Appeal Court, which was initially set up for the two then existing Grand Duchies in Parchim and moved to Rostock in 1840 at his instigation. Oertzen wrote the first court code and earned merit through his correct work.

Oertzen was married twice, first to Charlotte Ernestine von Mecklenburg. He had seven children with her, only two of whom survived their father: Jasper von Oertzen and Ludwig Georg von Oertzen . Ernestine died on November 24th, 1810. Oertzen married Caroline von Moltke for the second time in 1812. Of the four children born in this marriage, only two survived.

In 1821 Friedrich von Oertzen went blind in one eye and from 1843 his health deteriorated. Several times he asked the sovereign to retire. This was repeatedly rejected, so that Oertzen died mentally deranged in 1848 and was still president of the court until then.

Honors

On March 29, 1841, the city council of Rostock granted him honorary citizenship of the city . The occasion was his 50th anniversary with the company. According to the certificate of appointment, Rostock was grateful that Oertzen had ensured that the highest court in the state had its seat in Rostock.
