Friends of Lulu
Friends of Lulu ( friends of Lulu ) was a 1997 by Trina Robbins founded and other illustrators nonprofit organization in the United States of America .
The name is derived from the comic book heroine Little Lulu of 'Marge' ( Marjorie Henderson Buell ) from the 1940s , who fought undeterred by social conventions for admission to the Boys Club . Friends of Lulu encouraged women's participation in the comic industry and created social networks to facilitate communication between artists and women in other fields such as publishing , distribution and sales. Another goal was to increase the number of women in the readership. Regardless of gender, anyone who supported the goals of the organization could become a member.
Among other things, the organization published anthologies and offered interested parties a selection of comics worth reading on the homepage .
In 2011, Friends of Lulu was dissolved after the IRS lost its tax exemption and internal issues.
Lulu Awards
The "Lulu Awards", which have been presented annually since 1997, honor artists who deal with the topic of "women in comics" in a particularly noteworthy manner and thus write "comics for women". In addition to the admission of an artist to the “Women Cartoonists Hall of Fame”, the “Kimberly Yale Award”, named after the author Kim Yale , is given to a young up-and-coming artist and the “Lulu of the Year”. The award ceremony will take place at the Comic-Con International comic fair in San Diego .
