Friso Wielenga

Johan Willem Friso Wielenga (* 1956 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch historian .

Live and act

Friso Wielenga studied history and politics at the University of Amsterdam from 1975 to 1978 and at the University of Bonn in 1982/1983 with a DAAD scholarship . In 1989 he received his doctorate . He then taught international relations at the University of Groningen and, from 1990, political history at the University of Utrecht . In 1992 he became Associate Professor of German Contemporary History and Dutch-German Relations at the University of Groningen and in 1997 Associate Professor of German Contemporary History at the University of Utrecht.

Friso Wielenga has been director of the Center for Dutch Studies at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster since 1999 . He works as a journalist for the Dutch daily newspapers de Volkskrant and NRC Handelsblad . From 2001 to 2005 he was the commissioner of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia for the promotion of relations between the universities of the state and the universities of the Benelux countries .

In 2015 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his services to German-Dutch relations .
