Frithjof Haas

Frithjof Haas (* July 7, 1922 - † October 25, 2013 ) was a German conductor and musicologist .

Life

Haas completed his training at the Cologne Music Academy as a student of Walter Braunfels and Günter Wand, among others . From 1948 to 1987 he worked as Kapellmeister and director of studies at the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe . During this time he conducted 48 premieres, including modern works for which he was particularly committed. Haas wrote the libretto for the chamber opera Faust and Yorick by Wolfgang Rihm and directed its premiere in 1977; In 1979 he staged the opera Deidamia as part of the then Handel Days ; in 2006 he directed and moderated the opera Fürst und Sänger by Felix Mottl .

In Karlsruhe Palace he established the “Concerts of Contemporary Music”, a series of concerts that is continued today in the studio of the Badisches Staatstheater as “Nachtklänge”. In addition, he taught at the Karlsruhe University of Music and wrote several musicological works. For his services, Frithjof Haas was honored with the title of professor, an honorary doctorate and the Federal Cross of Merit. He was married to the soprano and chamber singer Eva Bober .
