Frits Flinkevleugel (born November 3, 1939 in Amsterdam ; † April 10, 2020 there ) was a Dutch football player . The defender completed eleven international matches in the Dutch national soccer team from 1964 to 1967.

career

At the age of 16 he played his first game for the Amsterdamsche FC DWS club . In the 1963/64 season he won the championship title with DWS , took part with his club in the competition for the European Cup in 1964/65 and reached the runner-up in the Eredivisie in 1964/65 . In the European Cup, the defensive strategist failed in the quarter-finals against the Hungarian representative Győri Vasas ETO (1: 1/0: 1). In the first leg on February 24, 1965 in Amsterdam, 46,915 spectators witnessed the 1-1 draw. With goalkeeper Jan Jongbloed and defenders Israel, Schrijvers and Pijlman, he formed the Amsterdam defensive line-up in both games.

In 1964, the defender completed his first international match, which was to be followed by another 10 games by 1967. In the national team he made his debut on December 9, 1964 in Amsterdam in a friendly against England (1: 1) at the side of his club mate and Liberos Rinus Israël . Ten years later, in 1977, he ended his career after several injuries.

Most recently he lived in Zandvoort . In April 2020, Flinkevleugel died during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
