Fritz Böhm (folklorist)

Friedrich Wilhelm Victor “Fritz” Böhm (born September 2, 1880 in Berlin ; † November 20, 1943 there ) was a German folklorist and grammar school teacher.

Life

Fritz Böhm, the son of the historian and grammar school teacher Willy Böhm (1846–1882) and Pauline geb. Reinhardt, attended the Sophien-Gymnasium in Berlin and after graduating (September 24, 1899) studied classical philology at the Berlin University . After the on December 8, 1904 Rigorosum at Hermann Diels and John Vahlen had insisted he was on March 4, 1905, a dissertation on the creeds of the Pythagorean Dr. phil. PhD ; he dedicated the study to the memory of Erwin Rohde . On November 21, 1905, Böhm passed the teaching examination in Latin and Greek; on February 19, 1906, a supplementary examination in history followed.

From April 1, 1906 to March 31, 1907, Böhm completed the seminar year at the Berlin Pedagogical Seminar and the Askanisches Gymnasium . On April 1, 1907, he began the probationary year at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium , where he was employed as a senior teacher on April 1, 1908. During the First World War he was awarded the Cross of Merit for War Aid on February 4, 1918 . On October 1, 1931, Böhm went to the Prinz-Heinrichs-Gymnasium in Berlin-Schöneberg and, after six months, switched to the Progymnasium on April 1, 1932. In 1937 he became a member of the NSDAP . On April 1, 1940, he returned to the Prinz-Heinrichs-Gymnasium, where he taught until his death.

In addition to the school service, Böhm devoted himself to scientific studies. His research focus was on ancient religion and German folklore . He has written numerous monographs and essays as well as articles for Paulys Realenzyklopädie der Classical Antiquity (RE). In the 1920s he was the second chairman of the Berlin Society for Folklore , from 1928 head of the Berlin Central Office of the Atlas of German Folklore and editor of the Zeitschrift für Volkskunde up to Volume 46 (1936/1937).
