Fritz Eggimann

Fritz Eggimann (born March 29, 1936 in Zurich ; † September 29, 2019 ) was a Swiss university professor and manager .

Life

Fritz Eggimann grew up in Zurich, where he also attended schools. He studied electrical engineering at the ETH Zurich and received his doctorate there. His dissertation, entitled Data Transmission on Telephone Lines , was published in 1965. After graduating, he joined Brown, Boveri & Cie (BBC) in Baden. In 1975 he took over the management of Cerberus AG in Männedorf (today part of Siemens Building Technologies ), where he introduced the concept of integral facility management. In 1984 returned to the BBC and headed the information and communications technology division . After the merger with ASEA, he was appointed head of ABB's Communications and Information Systems business area in 1988 .

He taught information technology in the postgraduate course in Department III B of the ETH from 1969 to 1985 and as the main consultant for technical management of the SKU Association of Swiss Courses for Business Management from 1986 to 1996.

On March 16, 1988, the Federal Council elected him as the new President of the Federal Materials Testing and Research Institute (Empa) and at the same time as full professor of information technology at ETH Zurich. During his work at Empa, this organization of the Confederation was realigned and expanded. In particular, he expanded materials testing to include applied research. He retired on April 1, 2001.
