Fritz Flato (born January 4, 1895 in Berlin ; † May 1949 in New York ) was a notary and lawyer who had been involved in the Scientific and Humanitarian Committee (WhK) since the early twenties . He also defended defendants under Section 175 and publishers such as Friedrich Radszuweit , the publisher of many lesbian and gay magazines.

Life

Emigration to New York

In 1934 Fritz Flato's license to practice was revoked due to his Jewish descent, whereupon he emigrated to New York in 1935. He could not really gain a foothold there, however, as his German law degree was not recognized. In May 1949, Fritz Flato committed suicide in New York.

Role in WhK

The activities of Fritz Flato within the WhK can only be verified since November 1929. In 1930 he became the first assessor of the management and board member, where he was responsible for legal affairs and took over criminal and administrative matters.

Plaque

On September 14, 2011, a memorial plaque for Flato was inaugurated next to the house at Kommandantenstrasse 62 in Berlin. In addition to the memorial text, a digitally created image of Fritz Flato and a photo of Flato with his parents, siblings and other relatives can be seen on the stele . The Berlin regional association of the German Red Cross (DRK) took over the sponsorship and the future maintenance of the monument.
