Fritz Günther

Fritz Karl Günther (born September 27, 1877 in Winkel (Rheingau) , † January 4, 1957 in Heidelberg ) was a German chemist who provided important foundations for synthetic detergents .

Günther was the son of a vineyard owner and studied chemistry from 1897 at the University of Munich with his doctorate in 1901 under Johannes Thiele on derivatives of dicyanohydroquinone. Also in 1901 he became a chemist at BASF . In 1928 he was granted power of attorney and he became deputy head of the main laboratory at BASF. In 1938 he retired due to an eye condition from which he later went blind.

He is known for developing detergents based on alkylarylsulfonates . The isopropylnaphthalene sulfonic acid he synthesized in 1917 was the first detergent without a fat base. The most important product from this series came on the market as Nekal and was found by Fritz Günther in 1925.

He also contributed to the development of azo dyes such as the development of fast coloring salts in 1923 (stabilized diazonium compounds ).

He was involved in 61 German patents .

He was married to Edith Klingelhöffer since 1907. His two sons were missing as soldiers on the Eastern Front during World War II .
