Fritz Haller (weightlifter)

Fritz Haller (* 1908 ; † November 8, 1961 ) was an Austrian weightlifter .

Life

Fritz Haller worked as a gymnast and soccer player in his early youth. In 1924 he joined the athletes' club in Himberg near Vienna and began weightlifting. At regional championships he achieved attractive performances and in 1926 the first regional championship of Lower Austria . He won his first Austrian championship in 1929. However, it was not until 1934 that his first international assignment.

His debut at the European Championships in Turin was furious. He won the title and beat the French Olympic champion Louis Hostin , who was so surprised by Haller's achievements that he made three failed attempts with two-armed pushing. In 1935 and 1936 Haller stagnated due to various injuries and illnesses. But 1937 and 1938 were once again great years for Haller when he won a world championship and a runner-up world title. Haller could hardly train during the war. In 1946 at the World Championships in Paris and in 1948 at the Olympic Games in London Haller was there again, but could no longer place in the front field.
