Fritz Hamelberg

Friedrich "Fritz" Hamelberg (born February 17, 1891 in Rethem (Aller) , † 1973 in Stadthagen ) was a German politician ( NSDAP , FDP ).

Life

Hamelberg, who was originally a butcher by profession, was mayor of the city of Stadthagen during the Nazi era . Although he was a staunch National Socialist, he was - unlike the mayors of Bückeburg and Rinteln - not considered a "harassment". This also led to disagreements with other National Socialist organizations. The SS leadership accused him of behavior that was damaging to the party because he had an SS man arrested in January 1935 after an attack on three young Jews. On the other hand, he advocated the " Aryanization " of Elias Lion's department store by Hermann Hagemeyer and its managing director Alfred Thomas, even if he prevented its dissolution to the displeasure of the Nazi trade association and local retailers, who saw the department store as an unpleasant competitor. After the war, Hamelberg claimed that he did not want an attack on the Stadthagen synagogue on November 9, 1938 . Therefore, the synagogue was only set on fire two days later when he was out of town. It is unclear whether Hamelberg's refusal or other reasons were actually decisive for this fact.

In addition to his work as mayor, Hamelberg was also a member of the Landtag of the Free State of Schaumburg-Lippe from the time it was reorganized on the basis of the provisional law to bring the states into line with the Reich in April 1933 until its dissolution on the basis of the law on the reconstruction of the Reich of January 30, 1934 .

After the Second World War , Hamelberg joined the FDP and ran for it unsuccessfully in the Bundestag election in 1953 in the Nienburg - Schaumburg-Lippe constituency .
