In addition to the dominant Aller, the Alpe also flows into the Aller in Rethem, whereby the main flood of the Alpe is now routed south of Rethem via the Alpe-Wölpe-Umfluter and - after the Wölpe has been absorbed - flows into the Aller in the district of Wohlendorf, downstream from the city center .

history
It was first mentioned indirectly in 1200, until it was first mentioned directly in 1239. The diocese of Minden owned goods in the city, towards the end of the 13th century the principality of Lüneburg took possession of the castle and village. In 1353, Rethem was granted city rights by the Lüneburg princes, which makes Rethem the oldest city in what is now the Heidekreis district. In 1885 Rethem had 1,334 inhabitants. During the First World War , the naval airship L 36 had to make an emergency landing on February 7, 1917 on the icy Aller near Rethem. Strong winds destroyed the airship within an hour.
Towards the end of the Second World War , in April 1945, Rethem became a military bridgehead over the Aller, which was fiercely fought over by British and German units. A memorial stone in Londy Park and the graves of the war cemetery remind us of this today.
