history

Old names of the place are 1242 Gelthene, Geltene, 1265 G (h) iltene and 1275 Ghiltenem. Despite these different place name variants, the name can probably be traced back to Giltun. The meaning relates to Old High German "Zun" for "fence", Old Frisian "do" for "fence, farm", Dutch "tuin" for "garden", Old Norse "do" for "fence", "fenced in piece of land", " Village". The meanings from Nordic and English are “enclosed space” and English “town” for “city”. The western Nordic and Icelandic "gil" means "narrow valley with a brook". In Swedish also “gilja” for “hollow road, mountain pass”. The meaning of the place name Gilten refers to the valley formed by the Aller, Leine and Alte Leine as "valley with a brook".

The place and with it the parish belonged to the diocese of Minden . During the 14th century, part of the parish was given to the Walsrode monastery. At the beginning of the 20th century the railway line from Verden to Schwarmstedt was built; it was shut down in 1988. Potash salt was mined in Gilten between 1911 and 1928. In 1848 there were 43 houses in the village and three farms suitable for state parliament. After the Second World War , Gilten grew to around 400 inhabitants. In 2004 the municipality had about 1150 inhabitants.

In the course of the regional reform in Lower Saxony , the previously independent communities Nienhagen, Norddrebber and Suderbruch were incorporated into the community of Gilten on March 1, 1974.

Municipal council

The council of the community Gilten consists of 10 councilors and councilors. This is the specified number for a municipality with a population between 1001 and 2000 inhabitants. Buildings

  • The oldest part of the St. Pauli Church in Gilten (Schwarmstedt) was built around 1450. Until 1775 the church served the Lords of Gilten as a hereditary burial place. The church contains a Gothic sacristy from 1480 and a choir from 1595. The half-timbered nave is from 1766. The church tower is made of lawn iron stone.
